New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
